Arugam Bay & the Southeast Coast

Sun, surf and beaches are the main features Arugam Bay and the Southeast coast are mostly known for. While these attributes are true, the area has a lot more to offer. Kumana National Park and Pottuvil Lagoon offer fantastic wildlife watching opportunities, and Ampara and Batticaloa feature historical and important religious sites such as the ancient temples of Mudu Maha Vihara and the Buddhangala Rock Heritage ruins. The shores around Passikudah and Kalmunai offer some of the best wreck diving sites in the world with more than 20 shipwrecks lying underneath the ocean surface, waiting to be explored by eager scuba divers.

Arugam Bay itself is known to be among the best 10 surf sites in the world, but also offers stunning beaches and snorkelling for visitors who are not into surfing. Batticaloa, the biggest city in the region, awaits visitors with colourful streets, Buddhist and Hindu temples, historical buildings and lovely beaches.
